Mission
1. It is a government organization dedicated to the study of the literature and performing
arts of the Mappila community and the expressive cultural traditions of the region. It serves
the society by providing programming, publications, policies, and resources examining
and affirming the diversity of human creativity across time and heritage.
2. Academy promotes researches in the field and publish books on various aspects of
Mappila culture with an objective of disseminating different aspects of the culture and
traditions and the role played by the Mappila communities in the evolution of the
secularism democracy and nationalism of the country
3. Academy publishes a quarterly journal (Ishal Paithrikam) containing research articles
connected with the social and cultural life and heritage of the nation, particularly of
Malabar. It also publishes an annual news letter narrating the various activities of the
Academy
4. It organizes Certificate and Diploma programmes in Mappila songs, literature and
performing arts
5. Academy maintains a museum of antiquities and paintings connected with the life of the
people of Malabar. It specially throws light to the traditional life of the people including peasants and traders of Malabar, the anti colonial struggles and fairs and
festivals of the region.
6. Special attempt has been made to study the life and contribution of Mahakavi Moyin
Kutty Vaidyar in whose name the academy has been established. Academy collects the
works of Vaidyar and publish them with an objective of introducing them to the new
generation.
7. A manuscript library cum information centre is maintained by the academy with a rare
collection of manuscripts in the Mappila dialect and facilities have been arranged to the
researchers to work in the centre.
8. An Audio visual unit to produce documentaries and films on the life traditions and
everyday life of the people is maintained. A mini theatre to
screen films and documentaries also has been setup.
9. An Archive of 3000 Mappila songs of various periods is also kept in the
Academy.
10. Academy regularly organizes seminars and symposiums on various themes related folk arts of the collaboration in association with colleges and
Universities with an objective of integrating the local traditions with the national culture
and promoting researches in the field.
11. A collections of photographs of eminent personalities who contributed to the field of
Mappila literature and that of the life and struggles of the Mappila Community, is
maintained.
12. Special attention has been given to train the differently abled people, particularly the blind
by providing the Mappila songs in Braille script.
13. Academy has a sub centre at Nadapuram, Calicut where it organizes similar activities
and attention is given to organize comparative cultural studies particularly that of
Northern ballads and martial arts with that of southern Malabar.
14. Academy organizes an annual festival called Vaidyar Mahotsavam to preserve the
memories of the heritage and tradition of the area. Competitions are held in arts and
literature. Kaviyarang, seminar, get-together of eminent singers
and lyricists are other highlights of the event. The Vaidyar memorial speech and
annual procession by the public are also organized as part of the Mahotsavam.
15. The Academy institutes awards to eminent personalities who have contributed to the
Mappila culture and literature. The Award is decided by an eminent jury and is distributed
in the annual festival.
16. There is a You Tube channel with the name “VAIDYAR TV” to promote music and
performing arts and to announce the programmes of the Academy. Other social mediasWebsite, Whatsapp, Face book - also are utilized for the purpose.
